I was born and raised in Belgium. My paternal grandfather was a stamp collector, who passed his collection to his son, my father. In turn, my father passed on the collection to me. I became an avid philatelist as a teenager in the 1970s, when my father's brother, also a philatelist, took me with him on trips to the Rue du Midi / Zuidstraat in downtown Brussels, where a large number of stamp stores were, and a few still are. The great times we had together buying (a lot) and selling (a few) stamps are forever engraved among my best memories.
In 1978, upon completion of university studies in engineering, I moved to the United States where I have lived ever since. As you can imagine, the pursuit of Belgian philately from the United States has not been easy, and I had to set my hobby aside for a good number of years ... until eBay came along in the late 1990s. Then, the fire of Belgian stamps was rekindled, and here I am sharing this interest with a large group of stamp friends, on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
Over the years, I have specialized like many other people do, and my current philatelic pursuits are now limited to used Belgian stamps before 1960. Areas of particular interest are stamps in used blocks of four, and stamps on fragments and on covers. Among preferred covers, I actively seek those with the Red Cross stamps of 1918, to which this site is dedicated, and with the Cardinal Mercier stamps of 1932.
I serve as the official English translator of Sebastien Delcampe's auction site delcampe.com.
Outside of philately, I work for a living under the name of Benoit Cushman-Roisin.
Feel free to email me at Benoit.R.Roisin@dartmouth.edu. I would love to hear from others who share my philatelic interests.
