Master of Engineering Management (M.E.M.)

The Master of Engineering Management (M.E.M.) program is a professional degree program. M.E.M. engineering and management courses are taught by faculty from Thayer School and Tuck School of Business. The combination of small classes and a high faculty-to-student ratio fosters class spirit and creates a stimulating intellectual environment.

Graduates of the program are engineers who understand the business of technology.

Curriculum

The curriculum integrates engineering, mathematics, and core management courses. Electives typically are engineering and management courses, but students may also choose courses from Dartmouth's other graduate science departments, Dartmouth Medical School, or Vermont Law School.

Advisors

A faculty advisor helps each student develop a program of study. Each program is submitted to and approved by one of the M.E.M. co-directors during the student's first term of residence.

Residency

Students must be in residence for a minimum of 3 academic terms.

Students who hold an ABET-accredited B.S. degree in engineering (or its equivalent) from a college other than Dartmouth generally require 4 terms (15 months).
Students who hold the Dartmouth A.B. in Engineering Sciences plus the Thayer School B.E. can finish the M.E.M. program in 3 terms.
Students whose bachelor's degree is NOT an ABET-accredited B.S. degree in engineering (or its equivalent) may have to take additional coursework to complete the M.E.M. degree.

Number of Courses

The number of courses required depends on the student's preparation. Students entering the program from a college other than Dartmouth generally take 13 courses.

Dartmouth students, including dual-degree students who have taken the B.E. at Thayer School, may count some A.B. and B.E. engineering sciences courses toward the M.E.M. degree, even if they are taken as part of the A.B. and/or B.E. requirements. Typically a holder of the Thayer School B.E. degree can complete the M.E.M. degree with 12 courses beyond the B.E. degree.

Internships

Students typically participate in an industry internship for ENGG 390 Master of Engineering Management Project/Internship, usually in the summer term. Students register for ENGG 390 in the term in which the work is done. A course fee may apply.

M.E.M. Programs Consortium

Thayer School is a member of the Master of Engineering Management Programs Consortium (MEMPC). The MEMPC is a small group of highly recognized professional graduate engineering management programs (including Duke, Northwestern, Stanford, and Cornell) that are working to raise awareness of the M.E.M.
