  • In comparing DieCAST and POM2k on identical grids and with identical initial and boundary conditions, we found that DieCAST produces more realistic meanders and eddies, and generates fronts at the proper location. In contrast, POM2k produces insufficient mesoscale variability and displaces some fronts.

  • Simulations with altered topography reveal that the meanders along the Italian coast have wavelengths controlled by the baroclinic radius of deformation (independent of topography) and offshore amplitudes controlled by offshore bottom slope.
